Velvet or “Makhmal” in Persian language is an expensive textile by elite people from centuries ago until now. Velvet is expensive for different reasons, first of all the textile is making from silk and it needs 3 workers at the same time to work and produce the fabric. To produce the fabric two looms are assembling together and the threads between them should be cut to make the velvet quality fur like piles on the surface. 

Velvet Weaving Isfahan history

Velvet weaving has root to thousand years ago and in safavid era velvet weaving industry brought to Isfahan. But the new industries of textile and velvet weaving started from 1950 in kashan near Isfahan by bringing new modern machineries. Unfortunately by introducing machine made velvet and textiles the local producers which had small workshops to produce textiles as velvet dissolved in the factories and many of them died or leaved their homes and this small handmade industry destroyed and disappeared. 
Today there are four workshops in Isfahan and Kashan which produce velvet and other traditional textiles in limited editions. In kashan there are two workshops which produce plain velvet and the other forms of velvets by hand. This handmade velvet is woven by order of the customers and in limited amount and version. In old times the cover of the Qoran was made from natural leather and expensive high quality textiles like velvet or silk and this tradition is followed until now from Seljuk period until new modern life today.
