Jashak Salt Dome

The Jashak Salt Dome, also known as the Dashti Salt Dome, is a vast area covering about 3,666 square kilometers. It's located in the Kakki and Bordkhun districts, nestled between the cities of Dashti and Deyr in Bushehr Province, roughly 144 kilometers southeast of Bushehr Port. This salt dome is found within the Jashak Mountain, near its northern end, and it stands taller than the surrounding landscape. It stretches from the northeast to the southwest. To the south, you'll find the village of Jashak in Deyr County, to the west is the village of Gankhak, to the east is Kordlan village, and to the north and east is Darvishi village in Dashti County. Interestingly, a river called Mand flows right next to this dome, which unfortunately makes the water salty. Before reaching the village of Baghan, the river water is sweet and drinkable, but after passing the dome, it absorbs a lot of salt and becomes extremely salty. Eventually, when the water evaporates completely, beautiful salt crystals form. This situation has led to excessive salinity in the soil of the Chahapur and Dashti plains, making the soil unsuitable for farming and cultivation. Geological and agricultural studies have shown that a significant part of the Zagros Mountains, especially the southern regions, is covered by salt domes. Research indicates that there are around 114 salt domes in southern Iran, particularly in Hormozgan and Bushehr provinces, with the Jashak Salt Dome being one of the largest and most stunning.

Features of the Jashak Salt Dome (Dashti)

Most of the salts in the Jashak Salt Dome are edible and white, resembling snow covering this part of the Zagros Mountains. If you drive along the Kangan to Bushehr road during summer, you can see what looks like a snow-covered mountain, which is actually a mountain covered in white salt. Another cool feature of the Jashak Salt Dome is the movement of salt masses due to gravity along the western slope, creating a look similar to an avalanche. The white appearance and resemblance to real snow glaciers have led to it being called a salt glacier. The salt masses cover the western peak of the dome and extend down the slope, making them look like real ice glaciers found in other mountains. This phenomenon is a unique tourist attraction in the region. The beautiful waterfalls of the Jashak Salt Dome are another highlight. These waterfalls are real and form from the rushing waters of the Zagros Mountains during the rainy seasons. In the warmer months, especially late spring and summer, the water gradually diminishes and evaporates, leaving behind white salt crystals. Once completely dry, the paths of the waterfalls are covered in salt, resembling ice masses along their routes, creating the illusion of a waterfall covered in ice. This phenomenon is a special tourist attraction during the scorching summer heat.

Another fascinating aspect of the Jashak Salt Dome is the formation of caves resulting from natural activities and the dissolution of salt masses within the dome's mountains. These caves, shaped over hundreds or perhaps thousands of years, contain stunning stalagmites and stalactites, making them highly valuable for natural tourism and capable of attracting thousands of visitors each year. Natural and environmental erosion, especially water erosion, has created beautiful features on the Jashak Salt Dome, including claw-like erosion patterns that are among the most beautiful geomorphological features. One of the most beautiful erosional phenomena is called "Takht-e-Div," which appears as columns among the salt domes. This formation is due to differences in the erosion resistance of the rocks and is recognized as a stunning tourist landscape. Dissolved and undissolved silicate salt crystals have formed over time into unique and beautiful shapes, creating picturesque views. Impurities in the salts have resulted in diverse colors and beautiful shades, allowing for stunning hues such as red, brown, white, yellow, black, and orange to be seen in the salt masses. This colorful palette captivates every viewer and attracts thousands of tourists each year. Most of the salts in this dome date back to the Precambrian and early Paleozoic geological periods. It's important to note that salt domes are continuously growing in length and volume while simultaneously eroding due to weathering, wind, and rain.

The Unique Features of Jashak Salt Dome

The Jashak Salt Dome, or its Dashti variant, is recognized as one of the largest, most beautiful, and most active salt domes in the Zagros Mountains and southern Iran. In 2007, it was registered by the Environmental Protection Organization as a national natural fossil site. This site is protected by the Environmental Protection Department, with a patrol station established near the village of Jashak in the Abadan District to safeguard this unique and beautiful phenomenon from destruction.

Fortunately, this stunning natural site was submitted for UNESCO World Heritage status in 2017 and is expected to be listed soon. Despite being located in a hot and dry region of Iran, Bushehr Province is unparalleled in its salt domes and beautiful landscapes. Given the stunning appearance of the salt domes and the uniqueness of the Jashak Salt Dome, there is significant potential for attracting tourists and sustainable development in this province. It is hoped that in the future, a large number of tourists and specialists will visit this salt dome, and the benefits from their visits will be utilized for dynamic and sustainable investment, fostering growth and development in this beautiful province.
