A Highland Oasis: History and Background of Choghakhor Lagoon

Choghakhor Lagoon   is an internationally significant wetland in Borujen County, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province. With an area of about 2,300 hectares, it is situated at the foot of the Bar Aftab and Kalar heights (3,830 meters above sea level) along the Borujen-Ahvaz road. Locally, this wetland is known as Lake Choghakhor.   Choghakhor Lagoon   is the water source for surrounding springs like Cheshmeh-ye Shahr Kohr, Shahrak-e Avargan, and Shahrak-e Goludgerd. The water depth of   Choghakhor Lagoon   reaches up to six meters during rainfall and high water levels. Its area is about 700 hectares, expanding during the months of Ordibehesht to Mehr (April to October) as the water level decreases.

Choghakhor Weather

The moderate climate in summer is one of the unique attractions of this area. The lagoon's water resources are mainly supplied through rainfall and surrounding springs.

The Choghakhor weather is influenced by four air masses

  •   Polar and high-pressure air masses from Europe
  •   Mediterranean air mass
  •   Tropical maritime air masses
  •   Polar air mass from the north of the country

The collision of these air masses results in a very moderate climate in this location.

 Sights Around Choghakhor

One of the most famous and popular sights around   Choghakhor Lagoon   is Bagh-e Khan (Khan's Garden). This garden is several hundred years old, dating back to the Zand dynasty. The area of Bagh-e Khan is about 3 hectares, featuring old trees with large trunks and lush branches of walnut, plane, fruit-bearing, and non-fruit-bearing trees. In ancient times, Bagh-e Khan was a summer resort and camping ground for the great Khans of the Bakhtiari tribe, including Timur Khan Bakhtiari and Sardar Asad Bakhtiari.

Renovation of the Choghakhor Lagoon Dam

Previously, there was a 6-meter high dam at the water outlet of   Choghakhor Lagoon  , with an area of about 1,360 hectares. With the construction of the new   Choghakhor   Dam, the area reached about 2,500 meters. The purpose of constructing this dam is to collect water transferred to the lagoon from the collection point at the Sabzkuh diversion dam, which, after entering a 4,500-meter long canal and an 8,500-meter long tunnel, will be transferred to the   Choghakhor   Dam lake. Due to the construction of the   Choghakhor   Dam, the necessary water for this lagoon has been reliably supplied, and the area of the lagoon has approximately doubled after the dam's construction. The local people use some of the water for agriculture. Also, the local people earn income through tourism in the   Choghakhor   residential, recreational, and tourist area. In summer, visiting the nomads and surrounding villages of   Choghakhor is very enjoyable.
